In a show packed with warriors, kings, and dragons, Game of Thrones also thrived on something subtler: menace. Few embodied that quiet threat better than Ian Hanmore as Pyat Pree, the eerie warlock of Qarth whose soft voice and calm presence hid something far more dangerous.
In this exclusive interview, Hanmore reflects on bringing one of the show’s most unsettling villains to life—and why restraint was key.
Finding the Fear in Stillness
“Pyat Pree doesn’t need to shout,” Hanmore says. “The power is in how little he shows.”
Rather than playing the character as overtly sinister, Hanmore leaned into composure and control. Pyat Pree’s danger comes from confidence—he knows more than everyone else in the room.
“The calmness is the threat,” Hanmore explains. “That’s what makes people uncomfortable.”
Magic Without Spectacle
Unlike many characters in Game of Thrones, Pyat Pree’s power is mystical rather than physical.
“He believes knowledge is power,” Hanmore says. “And that makes him dangerous in a very different way.”
Hanmore focused on making the magic feel psychological as much as supernatural—using tone, pacing, and presence rather than grand gestures.
“You don’t need fireworks if people are already leaning in,” he adds.
Working in the World of Westeros
Despite Pyat Pree’s limited screen time, Hanmore was keenly aware of the character’s impact.
“Every role matters in that world,” he says. “Even the smallest part can leave a mark.”
The Qarth storyline introduced a different flavor of threat—one rooted in illusion, manipulation, and control—and Hanmore embraced the opportunity to stand out without overpowering the story.
A Villain That Lingers
Looking back, Hanmore is proud of how Pyat Pree has stayed with audiences.
“He unsettles people,” Hanmore says with a smile. “That’s always a good sign.”
Final Thoughts
Ian Hanmore’s Pyat Pree proves that in Game of Thrones, danger didn’t always come with a sword. Sometimes it arrived softly, spoke politely—and waited for you to underestimate it.
And that’s exactly what made it unforgettable.
