I had the privilege of speaking with Iryna Hordiienko, a Ukrainian refugee and inspiring young woman, about her journey from hardship in Ukraine to building a new life in the UK. Iryna shares her experiences growing up in poverty and facing abuse in her family, and the courage it took to leave her home country in the midst of war.

Her journey to the UK was challenging, filled with anxiety and uncertainty, but Iryna’s determination and resilience carried her through. Even today, she speaks openly about the lingering fear and anxiety about the war in Ukraine and the nightmares it still brings. Despite these challenges, she is focused on making the most of every moment in her new home.

We also discuss the cultural differences she’s experienced, from the slower pace and politeness of British society to navigating daily life in a new country. Iryna shares her love of travel and her perspective on prioritizing experiences over material possessions, as well as her motivation to learn English and fully embrace the opportunities available to her.

Iryna’s story is one of courage, hope, and determination. She offers invaluable advice to other Ukrainians settling in the UK: keep going, embrace learning, and make the most of every opportunity. Her journey is a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of resilience.
