Filmmaker and actor Otoja Abit is making waves in the film industry with his bold storytelling and versatile talent. Best known for his award-winning debut short Jitters, which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in, Otoja continues to push creative boundaries with his first-of-its-kind urban-leaning holiday film, A New York Christmas Wedding.

The film follows Jennifer Ortiz (Nia Fairweather), whose Christmas wedding to her fiancé David (Otoja Abit) leads her on a journey of self-discovery. After a stressful dinner with her in-laws, Jennifer meets the angel Azrael, who offers her a glimpse of an alternate reality where she pursues her heart’s true desire: her childhood best friend, Gabrielle Vernaci (Adrina DeMeo). The film explores themes of love, courage, and identity, particularly touching on LGBTQIA experiences and religion, making it a heartfelt and timely story.

A New York Christmas Wedding has already hit the festival circuit, including the American Black Film Festival, Urbanworld Film Festival, and Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, under MarVista Entertainment.

Otoja’s impressive career also includes acting credits on HBO’s The Night Of, NBC’s Blackish, and Marvel’s Netflix The Defenders, as well as co-creating, producing, and starring in the New York Television Festival Official Selection Harlem Knights. In our conversation, Otoja shares his creative journey, the inspiration behind his films, and his mission to tell stories that challenge norms, celebrate identity, and move audiences.
