In this deeply moving and important conversation, I speak with Sean Cribbins, survivor of serial killer Bruce McArthur, alongside Sean’s partner Steve Sauder, who also composed the music score for the documentary Was I Next? The Sean Cribbins Story from iCogitate Productions.

The multiple award-winning documentary tells Sean’s extraordinary story of survival after a near-fatal encounter in 2017—an encounter he initially believed to be nothing more than a bad date. It was only months later, after McArthur’s arrest, that Sean learned the devastating truth about how close he came to becoming another victim, and the remarkable coincidence that saved his life.

While these events form the catalyst for the film, Was I Next? is not a conventional true-crime documentary. The filmmakers intentionally shift focus away from the perpetrator, instead centring on trauma, survivor’s guilt, cyber-bullying, victim-blaming, and ultimately healing and reclaiming one’s voice.

Sean speaks candidly about the emotional aftermath of learning the truth, and Steve shares how music became a powerful tool in shaping the film’s emotional journey. This is a vital, compassionate conversation about survival, resilience, and the long road toward healing.
