Exploring the Depths of Horror with Rich Varville

1 September, 2026 Hellblazerbiz 0 Comments 3 categories

A conversation with the Emmy-winning filmmaker of Area 1

In this issue, we delve into the mind of Rich Varville, a filmmaker whose passion for psychological thrillers and horror shines through in his latest project, Area 1. With over 25 years of experience in production and three Emmy Awards to his name, Rich shares insights on the importance of psychological depth in horror and the creative freedom his new studio, Holly Weird Pictures, affords him.

From Hollywood to Holly Weird

Rich’s journey into indie filmmaking began with a spark of inspiration: the quirky moniker “Hollyweird.” He explains, “Anytime we go to Hollywood, we always call it Hollyweird. I was surprised it wasn’t being used, so I submitted for trademark right away.” This playful name reflects his commitment to a unique brand of storytelling that combines classic B-movie charm with modern sensibilities.

The Essence of Psychological Horror

Rich’s heart lies in films that evoke thought rather than relying on gore or shock value. He emphasizes, “What really gets me is just the psychological elements of fear.” In Area 1, he aims to tap into primal fears, asking the audience to ponder the question: “What if?” He believes that true horror comes from the mind, allowing viewers to create their own narratives of dread.

“I like to allow the audience to create a much worse version of what’s going on in their own head.” — Rich Varville

Balancing Camp and Seriousness

In addition to Area 1, Rich has also worked on the whimsical Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise. He reflects on the challenge of blending campy humor with genuine thrills: “It’s a silly fun film, and the intent is for people to just have fun with it and laugh.” He finds joy in the communal experience of cinema, where audiences can share emotions—be it laughter, fear, or tears—in a packed theater.

Crafting Tension Through Realism

When discussing his approach to directing, Rich notes that he prefers a style where the audience knows the dangers the characters face. “Instead of big jump scares, the audience already knows what the characters are getting themselves into,” he explains. This creates a suspenseful atmosphere that resonates deeply with viewers.

Rich’s commitment to realism is evident in his storytelling. He aims for narratives that feel plausible, saying, “This could happen to you.” His upcoming film, Area 1, is steeped in historical context, drawing inspiration from events like Operation Paperclip, which adds layers of intrigue and depth to the horror.

A New Era of Indie Filmmaking

As Rich embarks on this new chapter with Holly Weird Pictures, he expresses excitement about the creative freedom it offers. He envisions a studio that, much like Blumhouse or A24, is known for a specific type of film—psychological thrillers that challenge the norm and engage audiences on a deeper level.

Rich Varville is not just making films; he’s creating experiences that linger in your mind long after the credits roll. As he puts it, “Having that communal effect is a powerful thing,” reminding us all of the unifying power of storytelling.
