Some interviews feel like work. Others feel like catching up with an old friend. My conversation with actor Sam Dalyfirmly landed in the second category. Sam is genuinely one of the good guys—warm, funny, thoughtful, and instantly easy to talk to. We even bonded over a fun coincidence: he has a young son with ginger hair… just like me. Clearly, greatness runs in the follicles.
What followed was a wide-ranging, laugh-filled chat about acting, family, pop culture, and the wonderfully unpredictable path of a working actor. So sit back and enjoy — we covered everything from The Office to Madam Secretary, Toys R Us, The Muppets, and plenty more along the way.
Growing Up Daly
Hailing from a prestigious line of Hollywood talent, Sam Daly grew up in a world where film sets and rehearsals were part of everyday life. The son of actor Tim Daly and actress Amy Van Nostrand, Sam’s childhood was anything but typical.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he lived a truly bi-coastal upbringing, bouncing between New York and Los Angeles as productions demanded. Ironically, despite being surrounded by actors, Sam was convinced he’d be the one to break the family tradition.
“I thought sports were going to be my thing,” he laughed.
It wasn’t until a film class at Middlebury College that the switch flipped — and acting suddenly made sense.
Making His Own Way
Rather than leaning on a famous surname, Sam has steadily carved out a career on his own terms. Fans will instantly recognise him from NBC’s The Office, where he memorably played Matt, Oscar’s shipping-department love interest — a role that still sparks conversation years later.
“That show just keeps living,” Sam joked. “People discover it for the first time every day.”
He’s also appeared in Grey’s Anatomy, and became a familiar face in the much-talked-about Dr Pepper ‘Backyard Football’ commercial alongside Doug Flutie and Steve Smith Sr., which aired heavily during the NFL season.
Madam Secretary and Working with Tim Daly
One of the highlights of Sam’s career has been his recurring role as Win Barrington on CBS’s hit political drama Madam Secretary, where he starred opposite Téa Leoni — and, in a twist of real life mirroring fiction, alongside his Emmy- and SAG-nominated father, Tim Daly.
“It was special,” Sam said. “Not something you take for granted.”
The show gave him the chance to work within a sharp, intelligent ensemble while continuing to grow as an actor in long-form storytelling.
From Zombies to Heists
Sam’s range doesn’t stop at drama and comedy. In 2018, he appeared as Marcus Gantt in the zombie comedy-horror Office Uprising, sharing the screen with Zachary Levi, Brenton Thwaites, and Jane Levy.
He also stepped into the gritty world of crime cinema as Officer Brendan O’Malley in RZA’s Cut Throat City, starring alongside Eiza González, T.I., and Wesley Snipes — a far cry from paper companies and political fundraisers.
The Daly Show, Superman, and Creativity
Beyond traditional film and TV, Sam co-stars in the popular YouTube series The Daly Show with his father — a project that perfectly captures their close relationship and shared sense of humour.
In a wonderfully nerdy footnote, the pair also share a unique honour: they are the only father and son to both play Superman, with Tim voicing the character in Superman: The Animated Series and Sam lending his voice in Justice League.
Add to that Sam’s work as a writer and producer, and it’s clear he’s just as passionate about creating stories as he is performing in them.
Life Beyond the Camera
When he’s not acting, Sam is a dedicated sports fan (Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, and Cowboys), a proud dad, and someone deeply committed to giving back. He’s actively involved with The Creative Coalition, where his father serves as president, and supports multiple charities focused on cancer treatment and child care.
Final Thoughts
My conversation with Sam Daly was full of laughs, heart, and genuine insight — the kind of chat that reminds you why these conversations matter in the first place. He’s a terrific actor, a thoughtful creative, and most importantly, a genuinely decent human being.
Whether you know him from The Office, Madam Secretary, indie films, or animated superheroes, Sam Daly is someone worth keeping an eye on — and listening to.
